“These are very challenging times for the Milton Public Schools,” Donahue said. “We must all be looking for additional sources of revenue so that we can continue to offer an excellent education to all our children. We have been talking about the need for a grant writer in Milton for years, and now seemed like the perfect time to follow through with the plan.”
Lynda-Lee Sheridan is a member of the School Committee and a liaison to the Milton Foundation for Education board of trustees. She has strongly advocated for a grant writer position in the past and made a compelling appeal to the MFE board earlier this year. Sheridan has done extensive research on grant writers in similar communities and is convinced that the time has come for Milton to look outside the town for additional funding.
“We are extraordinarily fortunate to have a number of very generous foundations in Milton who have donated substantial amounts of money to our schools over the years. We need to broaden this network to help address the needs of the school system, needs that include closing the achievement gap, supporting at-risk students, and providing enrichment programs for students. State and federal grant monies are currently going to other communities, but with the addition of this new grant writer, Milton can apply for our fair share of these resources.”
Sheridan praised the MFE for providing the funding for this position. “This is yet another example of the ongoing generosity and support the Milton Public Schools receives from the MFE.”
Sheridan is working with Mary Gormley, superintendent of the Milton Public Schools, on the job description and has already begun advertising for the position.
MFE is a nonprofit organization that raises money for the Milton Public Schools. Its signature events, the Monster Dash and Celebration for Education, raise over $250,000 annually for innovative programs and initiatives in each of the six public schools.
