Abandoned Dog Gets
New ‘Leash’ on Life

No matter how many times they have seen cases like “Matty,” it never gets easier for workers and volunteers at the Milton Animal Shelter.
Matty is one of the newest canine residents at the shelter, and arrived after being rescued near the state police barracks in the Blue Hills. When Animal Control Officers Linda Kippenberger and Nancy Bersani received the call on April 21 about an abandoned dog, they were somewhat shocked to see the condition of the animal.
The large, hairy dog could barely move due to his matted fur (hence the name “Matty”), according to Kippenberger. He was covered with dirt and bugs, and his skin was beginning to be burned from trapped urine in the clumped fur on his underbelly.
Following an initial screening and weigh-in, they brought him directly to be shaved, as that was the only way to deal with his grooming needs. After the mats were removed, Matty weighed 5 pounds less.
“We think he’s a Standard Poodle,” said Bersani. “That breed needs to be brushed, and whoever owned him apparently couldn’t care for him and dumped him.”
For Bersani and others at the shelter, it is hard to imagine treating an animal with such cruelty. They stress the fact that the shelter is available to help pet owners deal with unwanted animals.
But for now, Matty is enjoying his temporary digs. He is very friendly and full of energy, and is only about a year old, according to Bersani.
While he may appear a little odd now, sporting his sleek new look, workers at the shelter are anxious to see how his natural growth will fill in. He could qualify for the “best in makeover” at any dog show, and will be even more attractive once he is placed in a loving home.
Matty is available for adoption at the shelter. For more information, visit the shelter at 181 Gov. Stoughton Lane, or call (617) 698-0455.
