Following the successful completion of a $10.2 million renovation and construction of three new operating rooms and adjoining post anesthesia care unit (PACU), Carney Hospital hosted local leaders and senior executives from Steward Health Care to celebrate the addition of the hospital’s new state-of-the-art surgical suite.

Hospital President Bill Walczak presided over a ribbon cutting that included remarks from the hospital’s board chair, Chancellor Keith Motley of University of Massachusetts Boston; Dr. Michael Callum, EVP, president of the Steward Physician Network; and Boston Public Health Commission Executive Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

The event included a tour led by Dr. Martin Williams, Carney’s chief of surgery, who discussed the capabilities of the new operating rooms. Key features of the hospital’s new surgery facilities include an advanced high-definition monitor system mounted on adjustable booms that provide razor sharp images for the surgeons and their teams. The new facility locates the hospital’s PACU next to the operating rooms, allowing staff to quickly move patients to post anesthesia care without leaving the confines of the hospital’s surgery facility.

Among those in attendance were Boston City Councilor Maureen Feeney, a longtime Carney supporter; representatives from the Codman Square Community Health Center, Dorchester House Multi-Service Center and Neponset Health Center; and others.
