The Milton Times is a winner in the National Newspaper Association’s 2010 Newspaper Contest.
The Times won a third-place award in the category of Best Original Editorial Cartoon (Daily and Non-daily Division) for Publisher Pat Desmond’s cartoon published June 25, 2009.
The cartoon depicts Patriot Ledger reporter Fred Hanson saying, “If only more of you bought the Ledger, I’d still be writing on Milton.”Another person replies, “I go online.”
Hanson was the last reporter regularly assigned to cover Milton Selectmen for the Ledger. The paper still covers breaking news in the town.
The judges’ remarks explained why this cartoon caught their attention.“All newspapers can identify with the local community wanting more news but not supporting the written word with their subscription dollars so that we can give them what they want,” they said.
NNA Contest Chair Jeff Farren, publisher of the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, Ill., congratulated the Times in an award notification e-mail, saying, “[The] Milton Times has been judged by its peers among other entrants and selected to join the roll of this year’s award-winning newspapers in these national contests. Winners reflect the high quality of publications represented by the association.”
There were 1,990 entries in this year’s Better Newspaper Contest and 359 entries in the Better Newspaper Advertising Contest for a total of 2,349 entries. A total of 634 awards were won by 143 member newspapers in 37 states.
Winners have been posted online at www.nnaweb.org. Places won by General Excellence winners will be announced at the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” award reception Saturday, Oct. 2, during NNA’s annual convention and trade show at the Omaha Hilton and Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., where winners in attendance will be recognized. First-place entries will be on display during the convention.
Winners will also be recognized in a special contest PDF available at nnaweb.org following the award reception. Judges’ comments for first, second and third place awards will appear in the PDF.
Judging was performed by active community newspaper editors and publishers. It also included retired university journalism professors, and retired or former newspaper professionals.
