Town Receives Watershed Grant

6/16/11
The Patrick-Murray Administration awarded $201,812 in grants June 7 to four projects across the state for the purpose of conducting watershed non-point source pollution assessment and planning work to address water quality impairments.

The amount includes $37,000 for Milton’s Best Management Practices development project, which will identify suitable sites for retrofitting with structural and non-structural storm-water BMPs using a Low Impact Design approach to address pathogens and other pollutants of concern. Conceptual designs and cost estimates will be developed for BMPs at three or more sites. The project will utilize a methodology for identifying and prioritizing BMP retrofit opportunities that is currently employed on three existing projects in Sharon, Canton and Dedham.

“I am pleased that working with the Department of Environmental Protection, we were able to secure this funding for Milton,” said Sen. Brian Joyce. “These funds will help ensure that Milton has a clean water supply for years to come.”

“Grants such as these are a great testament to the work that these communities have done to help preserve the precious resources that we have,” said Rep. Walter Timilty.

The other projects, selected by the state Department of Environmental Protection, or MassDEP, are located in Adams, Carver and Woburn. The grants are funded by the U.S. Clean Water Act.

Qualified proposals were selected on a competitive basis and grant recipients include municipalities and regional planning commissions. Funding for the projects will be available this summer.

Since 1998, MassDEP has funded 68 projects under the program for nearly $3.2 million.
