It was in Boston that she met her husband of 14 years, Easton native Barry McDonough, an account executive for NStar. She fell in love with Milton while they searched for their first home together.
“I worked in Boston, so I wanted to be close to the city,” she explained. She said they looked around at other communities near Milton, but said they all had “too much of a city feel.” When they looked in Milton, she said she “absolutely loved the feeling. It had a lot of character, and the houses had a lot of character.”
The couple now has two children, Molly, 12, who attends Pierce Middle School, and Aidan, 7, a Cunningham School student. Both of the children take after their parents — Dad is a runner — and love sports.
“My kids are very athletic,” she said.
Aidan is a hockey player, and Molly is into soccer and basketball. Mom uses her own expert knowledge of the game to coach her daughter’s Milton Travel Basketball team.
After many years out of the office and working overtime on the home front, McDonough recently decided to get back into the professional game and “have something else I’m responsible for besides the laundry.”
“It’s great to use my mind,” she said.
She heard about an opening at the Times from local author and former Times employee, Mary Douglas.
“I said to her, I need something interesting, where I can learn some things, and someplace that has nice people,” she said. “I really like the job. I’m doing so many different things, the circulation, the billing, learning about the newspaper business.”
That’s not all — on top of those duties, she helps proof and track advertising, braves an oft-ignored crosswalk for the daily Post Office run, manages a ringing phone, and greets visitors with a smile and helpful attitude.
When she’s not doing a little bit of everything around the office, or the house, or on the basketball court, McDonough said she loves to read, cook and entertain guests. She is also a member of a monthly book club, and an all-female movie club that hits the theater for “all those girl movies the husbands won’t go to.”
When asked to describe herself in one sentence, she said, “I’m a fun-loving, caring, hard working person who loves her family.”
Now she can add an apt and valuable addition to a staff that is happy to have her.
