The town has chosen to turn the money over to the school department. However, that is not the practice in all communities, according to the Warrant Committee. Until the passage of this petition, Medicaid reimbursements were tied up until going through the process of Town Meeting appropriation. The petition, said Kelly, will allow the School Committee to use the money through a school-controlled revolving account to cover some special education costs.
Beirne Lovely calls the petition “a great result for Milton,” saying that the funds are “absolutely critical” in the wake of fiscal year budget cuts.
At the School Committee meeting on July 22, he praised Kelly, who he said has been a leading proponent of the school reimbursement.
“Without her tenacity, we would never have seen this,” he said.
Addressing local legislators, Lovely said: “We know how hard you fight for us. We just urge you to keep up that good fight and do all you can to support our school system.”
