Town Meeting Backs Selectmen

| October 31, 2013

By a nearly unanimous vote, Town Meeting members agreed on Oct. 29 to give Selectmen control over the town-owned portion of the Hendries building.

Approval of the Warrant Committee’s recommendation on Article 12, which gives Selectmen care, custody, management and control of the property at 0 Central Avenue, required a two-thirds vote from meeting members, and there were only a few voices of dissention.

Selectmen now have the power to negotiate a sale of the town portion of the 7,063-square-foot property with a party other than Connelly Construction, reversing Article 48 passed at the 2007 Town Meeting. Town Meeting members also supported the Warrant Committee’s recommendation to approve Article 13, which authorizes Selectmen to sell the town-owned land to a purchaser who agrees to construct a mixed commercial and residential building in conjunction with the Connelley-owned portion of the building.
