Voters support Treasurer McAuliffe’s bid keep post elected

Residents voted to have the town continue to elect their town treasurer, and returned current Town Treasurer/Collector James McAuliffe to his post with the most votes of any town-wide candidate in the field of uncontested races.

Town elections held April 30 drew 2,596 or 13.8 percent of the town’s 18,793 registered voters to the polls. They turned down Question 1, a measure proponents said was part of a plan to strengthen the town’s financial management by changing the treasurer from an elected to an appointed position. The vote was 1,058 in favor of the change and 1,442 against it.

“The taxpayers came out in droves in support of it. They want to keep their right to vote,” McAuliffe said after the results were announced.

McAuliffe, who has been in the position for a decade, earlier said the post needed to remain “an independent voice” at Town Hall.
